National Assembly President Ousmane Sonko traveled to Touba last Friday to offer his condolences to the family of Serigne Cheikh Saliou Mbacké, the late spiritual leader and successor of Serigne Saliou Mbacké. Upon addressing the deceased’s relatives, Ousmane Sonko could barely utter a few words before breaking down in tears. Those present interpreted his reaction as a testament to the close relationship he shared with the late guide. “I’ve never seen him cry before. He endured immense hardships between 2021 and 2024 without faltering. Today, his tears reflect the magnitude of this loss,” shared an attendee, moved by the scene.

Earlier that Thursday evening, as news of Serigne Cheikh Saliou Mbacké’s passing spread, Ousmane Sonko had already voiced his sorrow publicly. In a heartfelt tribute, he honored the man he regarded as a pillar of support in his life. “A father, a friend, a confidant, and a guide has left us. He stood by me in my darkest moments, offering compassion, guidance, prayers, and the strength of thousands of his disciples across the Daara communities,” Sonko reflected.
