Economic and infrastructure ties take center stage

The Head of State of Madagascar’s Refoundation, Colonel Michaël Randrianirina, attended the 66th anniversary of Chad’s independence in N’Djamena on August 11, 2026. The event, held at the Place de la Nation, featured a grand military parade. Invited by Chadian President Marshal Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, Randrianirina joined celebrations alongside Guinea-Bissau’s President, General Horta N’Tam. The three leaders wore military uniforms for the occasion. This visit also served to deepen discussions between Antananarivo and N’Djamena. The day before, the two heads of state met to explore ways to strengthen bilateral relations, focusing heavily on economic and infrastructure development. Randrianirina emphasized the importance of African unity, stating that “collaboration among African nations accelerates the continent’s progress.”

Reviving historical bonds

In his remarks, the Malagasy leader highlighted the long-standing diplomatic ties between Madagascar and Chad, noting that cooperation had waned over recent years despite their shared history. Both nations, having been French colonies, adopted republican status in 1958 and gained independence in 1960. However, significant potential remains for collaboration in multiple sectors. To further this goal, the Chadian President is scheduled to visit Madagascar, where both countries aim to solidify their partnership.
