Strengthening Gabon-Mauritania ties through shared francophone values
Deep-rooted diplomatic bonds between Gabon and Mauritania were further solidified this week during a high-level meeting in Libreville. The encounter brought together Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, President of Gabon, and Messouda Bahama Mohamed Laghdaf, Special Envoy of Mauritanian Head of State Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani.
The Mauritanian delegation, led by Laghdaf, conveyed a formal message highlighting her country’s commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation with Gabon. This partnership, rooted in mutual respect and shared commitment to regional stability, has long thrived on solidarity and open dialogue regarding common challenges.
During the discussions, Laghdaf formally presented Mauritania’s bid for the position of Secretary-General of the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OIF). The candidacy, championed by Dr. Koumba Ba, is built on a three-pillar strategy: coherence, balance, and tangible utility to serve member states effectively.
Gabon’s leadership warmly received Mauritania’s proposal, reaffirming its support for a consensus-driven and inclusive approach to governance. President Oligui Nguema emphasized the importance of collective decision-making, a principle central to Gabon’s diplomatic engagements across Africa.
This meeting underscores Gabon’s proactive foreign policy, which seeks to expand its African alliances while championing a vision of a more dynamic and development-focused Francophonie.
