Ousmane Sonko reignites membership drive after Magal break

After a multi-week hiatus following the Grand Magal de Touba festivities, the President of Pastef, Ousmane Sonko, has rekindled the vigorous pace that characterized his membership card sales campaign. The initiative originally commenced in Touba, where it was officially inaugurated during the ’48 Hours Pastef’ event. Since its launch, the tour had previously taken Sonko to Bargny, Sébikotane, Khombole, and Bambey, followed by stops in Keur Madiabel and Mbacké. Each of these locations witnessed scenes of fervent mobilization, mirroring the intense turnout observed during his July 26 visit, which notably coincided with the launch of the presidential party Kiiraay.

This renewed phase of the campaign aligns with Pastef’s ambitious target of surpassing one million members by October. This goal has been consistently articulated by Ousmane Sonko himself, particularly during his time in Mbacké, where he set a specific objective for that department alone. He notably declared that Mbacké could single-handedly generate one million new members. Earlier stages of the tour frequently resulted in membership cards selling out within hours, compelling the party to arrange rapid resupply efforts to meet the overwhelming demand.

This resumption unfolds within a charged political atmosphere, notably defined by the definitive rift between Ousmane Sonko and President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. Furthermore, the recent unveiling of the new presidential party, Kiiraay, has prompted the departure of several key Pastef figures in recent weeks. In response to these defections, the party leader had recently urged his activists to refrain from commenting on the departures and instead maintain sharp focus on the ongoing campaign’s objectives.
