The Tchad has reached a major milestone in its energy transition with the inauguration of a solar power plant in Adré, a strategic town in the Ouaddaï region. This high-profile event underscores the government’s unwavering commitment to expanding access to clean energy nationwide.
Adré’s new solar plant: a transformative project for the region
The inauguration ceremony, held on August 7, 2026, was led by the Assoungha departmental prefect and attended by key figures including the chair of the Agence pour le Développement de l’Électrification Rurale et la Maîtrise de l’Énergie (ADERM), its director-general, local authorities, technical partners, and community members. The plant represents a decisive step toward improving electricity supply, enhancing living standards, and fostering economic growth in the Assoungha region.
A collective achievement rooted in national vision
Speaking at the event, Adré Mayor Ahmat Abderrahim praised the project as a cornerstone of the city’s energy future, highlighting the leadership’s dedication to sustainable development. ADERM Director-General Younous Daoussa Mahamat emphasized that the plant is far more than infrastructure—it is the realization of a bold political vision. He noted that the project was personally instructed by President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, reflecting the Head of State’s resolve to ensure universal energy access as a fundamental right. “No citizen should be left behind, no town should remain in darkness, and no youth should have their future limited by a lack of electricity,” he declared.
Technical specifications: powering progress
The hybrid solar plant in Adré integrates advanced technologies to maximize reliability and efficiency. It features:
- 4,800 photovoltaic panels, each delivering 585 watts, totaling 2.8 megawatts-peak of installed capacity;
- A 7.5 megawatt-hours battery storage system to ensure consistent power supply;
- Two 500 KVA diesel generators as backup;
- 5 kilometers of medium-voltage and 10 kilometers of low-voltage power lines to extend coverage.
Community and leadership celebrate a new era
The prefect of Assoungha, Dillo Bergou, conveyed the gratitude of Adré’s residents to President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno for prioritizing the region’s development. He also commended all stakeholders involved in bringing the project to fruition.
