The prospect of dissolving Senegal’s National Assembly remains a central topic in the nation’s political discourse. At a Pastef rally held this Saturday in Linguère, Ousmane Sonko articulated his firm stance on this potential move, simultaneously issuing a clear warning to President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.
The Pastef leader asserted that any dissolution of the National Assembly, followed by snap legislative elections, would not benefit the current administration. He confidently predicted a decisive victory for his political movement in such a ballot.
“Should local elections be organized, we will defeat him,” Sonko declared. “If he dissolves the Assembly, the outcome will be even more unfavorable for him. In fact, that is precisely what we desire, as we are certain to achieve a resounding victory.”
Ousmane Sonko further elaborated, suggesting that an electoral setback could significantly weaken the head of state politically.
“Afterward,” he added, “I even fear he might abandon his post before 2029.”
Sonko urges his supporters to maintain calm
Beyond the immediate electoral outlook, the president of Pastef also implored his activists to exercise caution and restraint. He specifically urged them to resist falling victim to any potential provocations.
Ousmane Sonko expressed his belief that certain elements are actively seeking to incite reactions from his party’s members, thereby creating a pretext to justify actions against Pastef.
“I call upon everyone to remain vigilant and calm,” he asserted. “They are attempting to provoke Pastef, hoping our youth will react, which would then allow them to dissolve the party and revoke its official registration.”
The Pastef leader concluded that if his militants successfully navigate these provocations and remain steadfastly mobilized, the upcoming electoral contests could overwhelmingly favor his movement, which he characterized as a “mere walk in the park.”
