Sonko demands immediate clarity on local election schedule
Ousmane Sonko, leader of Senegal’s Pastef party, has intensified pressure on President Bassirou Diomaye Faye regarding the postponement of local elections. During a campaign stop in Louga on Saturday, Sonko addressed supporters while distributing voter registration cards, sharply criticizing the government’s delay in setting an election date.
In front of a packed crowd, he highlighted recent dismissals of public officials, questioning why similar executive decrees couldn’t apply to scheduling elections. “Removing officials like Fadilou Keïta and Waly Diouf Bodiang falls within presidential powers—no one disputes that. But fixing an election date should be handled with the same urgency,” Sonko argued.
No room for election delays, insists Sonko
Sonko has consistently opposed any postponement of the local elections, reiterating his stance in Louga. He emphasized the need for urgent clarity on the electoral calendar, suggesting that the current uncertainty may stem from apprehensions about Pastef’s growing influence. “The energy and mobilization of our militants could be unsettling to those in power,” he stated.
