Benin Senate inauguration: Talon pledges unity and stability

Patrice Talon officially assumed leadership of Benin’s first-ever Senate mandate for the 2026-2031 period on August 6, 2026, delivering a solemn inauguration address following his election.

Unity and collective responsibility

Addressing the chamber’s senior member and all newly elected senators, Talon expressed deep gratitude for the trust placed in the elected bureau and its deputy rapporteur. He emphasized the harmonious spirit that characterized the institution’s establishment phase, calling for a renewed commitment to building a cohesive legislative community.

The president-elect urged senators to prioritize teamwork, consensus-building, and collegiality over individual differences, framing these values as essential to the Senate’s effective functioning. He stressed that the chamber’s success would hinge on shared responsibility, dignity, and an unwavering focus on the nation’s higher interests.

Strengthening national cohesion

Talon acknowledged past criticisms regarding perceived divisions during his previous presidential terms, reaffirming his dedication to leveraging this new role to reinforce national unity, political stability, peace, and democratic governance in Benin. He called on fellow legislators to actively uphold these collective aspirations.

The leadership team

The inaugural Senate session, conducted behind closed doors on August 6, resulted in the election of Patrice Talon as its first president. He will be supported by Louis Vlavonou, former president of the National Assembly, who has been elected vice-president of the Senate. Alassane Seidou and Adidjatou Mathys were appointed as rapporteur and deputy rapporteur, respectively, completing the chamber’s leadership structure.
