A recent study by English researcher Antonia Juelich reveals a disturbing trend: the terrorist organization Boko Haram is systematically leveraging artificial intelligence. This group, notorious for two decades of massacres and war crimes across northern Nigeria, is now integrating advanced technology into its violent operations.
As artificial intelligence increasingly permeates our daily lives, it appears terrorist factions are not hesitating to exploit its capabilities. Juelich’s comprehensive research demonstrates Boko Haram’s consistent application of AI for critical military decision-making, marking a significant escalation in their operational methods within northern Nigeria.
Over recent years, other extremist groups, notably the Islamic State, have cultivated extensive networks of trainers. These networks include AI specialists from around the globe, deployed to instruct and empower militant forces on the ground.
“Allah helped us, AI will help us too”
Members of Boko Haram have recounted detailed training sessions, complete with slides and projectors, designed to impart mastery of AI tools. They claim that this newfound knowledge has enabled them to activate and utilize foreign weaponry, even providing guidance on maintenance, such as cleaning components with diesel, all thanks to AI-driven advice.
Furthermore, reports indicate that popular AI platforms like ChatGPT, Grok, and Gemini have been instrumental in teaching jihadists how to construct novel and more potent explosives for combat scenarios.
The study also highlights a striking example where terrorists, guided by AI, successfully navigated a motorcycle across a ditch, reminiscent of an action film sequence, to launch an assault on a military base in Nigeria.
This development signifies a critical shift. While Islamist groups have long employed AI for propaganda purposes, they are now transforming this technology into a formidable operational asset. This dangerous evolution is underscored by a chilling mantra frequently echoed within Boko Haram’s ranks: “Allah helped us, AI will help us too.”
