During a high-level diplomatic visit to Rabat on Friday, June 19, 2026, Burundi once again confirmed its steadfast commitment to Morocco’s territorial integrity. This position was formally expressed following a meeting between the Burundian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Edouard Bizimana, and his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita.
In a joint statement released after their discussions, Bujumbura emphasized that the autonomy initiative proposed by Morocco represents the only realistic and credible path toward resolving this regional dispute. Furthermore, Burundi voiced its support for the ongoing political process conducted under the auspices of the United Nations, which views the Moroccan plan as a definitive solution.
Strengthening diplomatic ties and regional stability
This renewed endorsement from Burundi reflects a growing trend across the African continent in favor of Morocco‘s national cause. The Burundian delegation also highlighted the importance of UN Security Council Resolution 2797, noting that it reinforces the autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty as the essential foundation for a just and lasting political settlement.
As Morocco continues to expand its circle of international allies, this meeting in Rabat serves as a clear indicator of the deepening bilateral relations between the two nations and their shared vision for stability in the region.
