Sixty-four years after diplomatic relations were first established, Canada has officially opened its inaugural embassy in Cotonou, Bénin. The grand opening ceremony, held on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, was a pivotal moment, presided over by Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand, who was on a working visit to Bénin. Her Béninese counterpart, Corinne Amori Brunet, was also in attendance, alongside members of the diplomatic corps and Hugues Oscar Lokossou, the Minister Delegate to the Minister of Economy and Finance, responsible for External Resource Mobilization and Debt Management.
This historic establishment underscores the enduring friendship between the two nations and their shared ambition to elevate their cooperation to unprecedented levels. The presence of a full-fledged embassy in Cotonou is poised to deepen political discourse, facilitate more direct oversight of bilateral agreements, and fortify collaboration across various strategic sectors.
“Canada is unwavering in its commitment to partner with Bénin, and today, we are injecting fresh momentum into this vital relationship,” declared the Honourable Anita Anand. Echoing her sentiments, Béninese Minister Corinne Amori Brunet emphasized that the embassy’s inauguration signifies a significant rapprochement and an intensified dynamic between Bénin and Canada. She added, “Our cooperation is expanding, becoming more diverse, and investing further in critical areas such as the economy, innovation, security, and human development—values deeply cherished by both Bénin and Canada.”
Earlier that same Wednesday, Minister Anand and Minister Brunet had already taken a crucial step by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focused on political and diplomatic consultations. This landmark document creates a lasting framework for ongoing discussions, designed to foster more profound political dialogue, ensure consistent monitoring of bilateral commitments, and enhance coordination on significant regional and international matters.
The day’s agenda also included an extensive working session. Participants in this high-level meeting included Olushegun Adjadi Bakari, Minister of Tourism and Foreign Trade, also overseeing Industry and Private Investment Promotion; Gildas Agonkan, Minister Delegate to the President of the Republic, responsible for National Defense; and Hugues Oscar Lokossou, the Minister Delegate to the Minister of Economy and Finance, charged with External Resource Mobilization and Debt Management.
