The Malian Armed Forces (FAMA) have declared a strategic shift in the nationwide conflict, asserting control over areas previously contested by armed factions. Recent operations targeted positions held by the Front de Libération de l’Azawad (FLA) in the northern territories, as well as the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), an Al-Qaeda-affiliated faction operating in central and southern Mali.
In a formal statement, the Malian military confirmed that intense clashes persisted on Sunday near Anifif, located roughly 110 kilometers south of Kidal. The fighting intensified following the arrival of additional fighters and supplies for the FLA, prompting a robust counteroffensive by FAMA units.
The army’s communiqué emphasized the resilience and discipline of its forces, stating: « Under sustained pressure, our troops maintained relentless combat operations throughout the day, demonstrating unwavering courage and tactical precision. » The statement further underscored the military’s « absolute confidence in its ability to secure national sovereignty, protect civilians, and dismantle hostile forces. »
Meanwhile, representatives of the FLA issued their own assessment, with spokesperson Mohamed Mouloud Ramadan asserting that their fighters had stabilized the situation in Anifif following the resumption of hostilities. He also refuted claims of the FLA leader’s death, insisting that Mbarek Ag Akli remains actively involved in directing ground operations across northern Mali.
