Patrice Talon sworn in as president of Benin’s Senate

Former President of the Republic Patrice Talon has been elected as the first-ever president of Benin’s Senate, following a vote held in Porto-Novo on August 6, 2026. Addressing the newly assembled senators at the Governor’s Palace, Talon emphasized the need to transform the institution into a united “family” grounded in consensus, responsibility, and shared values.

From presidency to Senate leadership

Less than two months after concluding his presidential mandate and handing over power to Romuald Wadagni, Patrice Talon returns to an official role as head of Benin’s upper house of Parliament. The historic election, which took place in Porto-Novo, marked the beginning of a five-year term for Talon, alongside newly elected Vice President Louis Vlavonou and Rapporteur Alassane Seidou.

Unity and shared responsibility take center stage

In his inaugural speech, Talon expressed gratitude to his fellow senators, highlighting the remarkable atmosphere that had emerged during the election of the bureau. “We have experienced an extraordinary climate in recent days that has erased our differences,” he noted, urging the chamber to embrace a spirit of togetherness. He pledged to leverage his experience to strengthen the Senate’s effectiveness, stating: “I want this institution to function like a united family.”

Outlining his vision for the legislative term, Talon identified four core priorities: reinforcing national unity, political stability, peace, and democracy in Benin. He concluded with a call for collective accountability, urging senators to hold one another—and themselves—to the highest standards of public service.

The historic session followed the official inauguration of the Senate on July 30, 2026, and the constitutional validation of its internal regulations by the Constitutional Court on August 3.
