PSG decides to keep Lucas Chevalier despite his loss of starting spot

Lucas Chevalier was expected to succeed Gianluigi Donnarumma as PSG’s first-choice goalkeeper, but he lost his starting role during the season to Matvey Safonov. However, the Parisian club has decided against selling the French shot-stopper.

Last summer, PSG made a major change despite a quiet transfer window. Gianluigi Donnarumma left after a strong second half of the season and was replaced by Lucas Chevalier, who arrived from Lille for around €40 million. Although Chevalier was seen as the long-term starter in Paris, his disappointing performances quickly led to him losing his place to Matvey Safonov.

PSG has chosen to keep Lucas Chevalier

The Russian international has since remained the undisputed starter, leading PSG to back-to-back Champions League titles. This might suggest Chevalier’s future at the club is uncertain, but Paris has decided to retain him this summer. A transfer is not on the cards, as Chevalier’s attitude and second-half contributions have convinced the staff.

A young goalkeeper arrives!

PSG is also preparing for the future in goal. An 18-year-old Italian goalkeeper, Alessandro Longoni, is set to join the club as a free agent from AC Milan. He will offset the departure of Renato Marin, who will spend a season on loan at Portuguese first-division side CD Nacional. This means that while Safonov and Chevalier will compete for the starting spot next season, Longoni and Marin could eventually succeed them.
