In a decisive political move, Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye unveiled his new political party, Kiiraay – Les Patriotes républicains, on Saturday in Dakar, signaling an unmistakable break from his former mentor and ex-Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko. The party’s name, which translates to ‘protection’ or ‘shield’ in Wolof, stems from the transformation of the Diomaye Président coalition that propelled Mr. Faye to the presidency in 2024.
The head of state addressed a large gathering of supporters, positioning Kiiraay as a movement anchored in ‘the Republic, ethics, transparency, fraternity, and hard work,’ boldly declaring it ‘the majority party in the country.’ The slogan ‘The Fatherland First’ underscores his commitment to uniting Senegalese citizens under a new political vision centered on his presidential agenda.
The establishment of Kiiraay marks the culmination of months of escalating tensions between President Faye and Ousmane Sonko, two leaders who once joined forces to secure power under the Pastef banner. Their rift, fueled by disagreements over debt management and institutional reforms, culminated in Mr. Sonko’s dismissal in May. Though still holding the titles of National Assembly President and Pastef leader—with the party maintaining a parliamentary majority—Sonko’s position leaves room for continued political rivalry at the highest echelons of government.
