The pursuit of Julian Alvarez, a target for Paris Saint-Germain two years prior to his move to Atletico Madrid, appears far from over. While PSG reportedly maintains interest, it is now FC Barcelona that could potentially derail their plans, a prospect seemingly welcomed by Barcelona midfielder Pedri.

The future of Julian Alvarez has been a central topic since the summer transfer window officially opened on June 15th, set to close on September 1st. The 26-year-old Argentine international is currently competing in his second World Cup with Argentina on the American continent. Despite being under contract with Atletico Madrid until 2030, the forward for the Colchoneros reportedly has no intention of returning to the Spanish capital once the 2026 World Cup concludes.
“I believe a transfer is what’s best for everyone”
Following Argentina’s 2-0 victory over Austria on Monday, securing their place in the 2026 World Cup Round of 16, Julian Alvarez openly discussed his desire for a move. Speaking in the mixed zone, he hinted at a strong preference for joining FC Barcelona. “This isn’t the time to discuss it, but I also cannot hide; I strive to be an honest person. I’ve spoken with people at Atlético de Madrid, and I believe a transfer is what’s best for everyone. I want to fulfill my dream.”
“I hope this transfer can happen, and if so, all the better”
This development presents a challenge for PSG, who, much like in the summer of 2024 before Alvarez’s transfer to Atletico Madrid, have reportedly kept a close watch on the striker’s situation. Adding to the intrigue, FC Barcelona is already rolling out the red carpet for Julian Alvarez. This was evident in comments made by Pedri during an interview with RTVE. “A transfer of Julian Alvarez to FC Barcelona? I think many things would need to align for that to happen. I don’t want to interfere with the club’s affairs, nor those of a player. It’s true that I adore Julian as a player, and I’ve always said I want the best players at Barça. I hope this transfer can happen, and if so, all the better.” The FC Barcelona midfielder has certainly initiated the public discourse. The question now remains whether Paris Saint-Germain will respond publicly or behind the scenes to tip the scales in their favor in the race to sign Alvarez.
