What if a single agricultural project could reshape the economic destiny of an entire region? That is the question hanging over Bambali, the native village of Senegalese football star Sadio Mané, where a massive agro-industrial park has just broken ground. Ousmane Sonko, president of the National Assembly, travelled to the Sédhiou region to attend the launch ceremony, answering Sadio Mané’s personal invitation.
A high-profile gathering in Bambali
Sonko was joined by several senior officials, including Trade Minister Serigne Guèye Diop. Upon arrival, the delegation was welcomed by Sadio Mané himself, the driving force behind the SM10 Agro project. The presence of such prominent figures underscores the political and economic weight of the initiative.
An 11.7 billion FCFA bet on local agriculture
The Bambali agro-industrial park is designed to transform local agricultural output, with mango as its flagship crop. Organisers have put the total investment at 11.7 billion FCFA. The laying of the foundation stone formally marks the start of construction in the footballer’s home village.
Processing capacity and job creation targets
The future complex is expected to significantly boost mango processing and treatment capabilities across the region. Promoters have announced a processing capacity of 8,500 tonnes per year, along with the creation of more than 1,000 direct jobs, with a longer-term goal of 2,500 positions.
The project aims to add value to local agricultural production and stimulate economic activity throughout the Sédhiou region. Whether it can deliver on those promises is now the central question for the communities it is meant to serve.
