Yopougon hosts groundbreaking national week for women’s contributions
The Femme Ivoirienne en Politique (FIP) organization has officially launched the first National Week of Celebrating Women Builders of the Nation, marking a historic milestone ahead of Côte d’Ivoire’s 66th Independence Day anniversary. The event, which kicked off on Thursday, July 30, will run from August 1 to 4, 2026 at the Yopougon Town Hall.
Reflecting on progress and shaping future policies
The initiative, themed “66 Years of Côte d’Ivoire’s Independence: What gains for women and what lies ahead?”, aims to spotlight the vital role women have played in the country’s political, economic, social, and cultural progress. It also serves as a platform to assess remaining challenges and chart actionable solutions for policymakers.
Rebecca Yao, President of FIP, emphasized the importance of this reflection: “We recognized the need to pause and evaluate the progress made by women since independence, pinpoint ongoing obstacles, and propose concrete measures to strengthen public policies.”
A dynamic program of dialogue and recognition
From August 1 to 3, Yopougon Town Hall will host a national symposium featuring a keynote address and sixteen specialized panels covering leadership, health, education, economic empowerment, youth development, and women’s rights. An exhibition will showcase the inspiring journeys of pioneering women alongside successful female-led projects and entrepreneurship initiatives.
The week’s activities will culminate in a white paper to be submitted to government authorities, ensuring that recommendations are tracked and implemented. The highlight will be the August 4 gala dinner at the Sofitel Hôtel Ivoire, where 66 pioneering women will be honored for their lifelong contributions since 1960.
Building a lasting tradition
Rebecca Yao shared her vision for the initiative’s future: “Before introducing new proposals, we will revisit and assess the resolutions from each previous edition to measure progress.” The goal is to establish this week as an annual event fostering dialogue, reflection, and public recognition of women’s indispensable role in shaping Côte d’Ivoire’s future.
Mireille Bamba, Member of Parliament for Yopougon, praised the initiative and reaffirmed the support of Deputy-Mayor Adama Bictogo. Together, they aim to make this week a cornerstone of national discourse, celebrating women as architects of the nation’s progress.
