Gabon backs Mauritania’s bid for OIF leadership

On Monday, June 22, Messouda Bahama MOHAMED LAGHDAF, the Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development for the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, conveyed an official message from President Mohamed OULD CHEIKH EL GHAZOUANI to Gabonese Head of State Oligui Nguema. The purpose of her visit was to formally present Mauritania’s candidacy for the esteemed position of Secretary-General of the International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF).

This significant bid, championed by Dr. Koumba BA, outlines a strategic vision built upon three core tenets: coherence, balance, and direct utility to all member states. The discussions underscored the excellent and robust diplomatic ties between Libreville and Nouakchott. During her exchange, the Special Envoy reiterated Mauritania’s strong desire to deepen bilateral cooperation with Gabon, a relationship historically rooted in mutual respect, solidarity, and ongoing consultation on matters of common interest.

The Gabonese Head of State, for his part, reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to consensus-building and collaborative governance, principles that guide his political actions on the continental stage. This meeting fully aligns with the President’s vision, embodying Gabon’s proactive diplomatic efforts.

It further demonstrates Gabon’s ambition to diversify its African partnerships while reinforcing its dedication to a dynamic, effective, and resolutely co-development-oriented Francophonie.
