The Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) have declared a renewed upper hand in operations against militant factions in the northern and central regions of the country. A recent official statement confirms that government troops have reclaimed strategic positions previously contested by the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA) in the north and the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), an Al-Qaeda affiliate, operating across central and southern Mali.
Intense fighting persisted on Sunday at Anifif, a key locality situated roughly 110 kilometers south of Kidal in the northeast. The clashes erupted following the arrival of additional fighters and supplies for the MNLA, prompting a robust response from Malian security units.
In their communiqué, the FAMa highlighted the resilience of their forces, stating: “Despite the enemy’s tactical reinforcement attempts, our troops maintained relentless pressure, engaging in sustained combat throughout the day with unwavering discipline and bravery.”
The military leadership underscored its unwavering confidence in the nation’s defense capabilities, reaffirming their commitment to safeguarding territorial integrity, protecting civilians, and dismantling hostile armed groups. The statement emphasized that the Malian Armed Forces remain fully capable of securing victory on all fronts.
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the MNLA, Mohamed Mouloud Ramadan, had earlier claimed control over Anifif following the resumption of hostilities. He also categorically denied reports of the death of the group’s leader, Mbarek Ag Akli, insisting that the commander continues to oversee military operations in the northern territories.
