Bridging partnerships: AES and Russia align on security and economic goals
Niamey, the heart of Niger, became the epicenter of regional diplomacy this past Wednesday, July 8, as the second round of high-level consultations unfolded between foreign affairs ministers of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) and their Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov.
Joining the discussions were Bakary Yaou Sangaré (Niger), Abdoulaye Diop (Mali), and Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré (Burkina Faso), whose collaborative efforts yielded fresh agreements cementing mutual diplomatic priorities.
Abdoulaye Diop highlighted the “fruitful and consistent exchanges” between the AES and Russia, which have already borne tangible results. These span military cooperation, economic growth initiatives, and trade partnerships, all underpinned by a shared strategic vision.
On the security front, the AES ministers underscored the urgent need to “ramp up joint military efforts” to bolster the operational readiness of the AES Unified Force. They also emphasized deepening economic collaboration as outlined in the “Second-Year Roadmap of the AES Confederation”.
Speaking from the Nigerien capital, Sergey Lavrov reiterated Russia’s unwavering commitment to a “mutually advantageous partnership” with the AES. He reaffirmed support for both regional security operations and sustainable development projects designed to uplift local communities across the Sahel.
The diplomatic engagement followed the inaugural AES-Russia consultations held in April 2025 in Moscow, marking a key milestone in Sergey Lavrov’s recent African diplomatic tour.
