Strengthening strategic partnerships in the Sahel
Niamey served as the diplomatic hub this past Wednesday, July 8, hosting the second round of high-level consultations between foreign affairs ministers of the Sahel States Alliance (AES) and their Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov.
The gathering brought together the region’s top diplomats, including Niger’s Bakary Yaou Sangaré, Mali’s Abdoulaye Diop, and Burkina Faso’s Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré, who jointly outlined fresh convergence points for collaboration across multiple sectors.
Military cooperation takes center stage
Mali’s Foreign Minister, Abdoulaye Diop, highlighted the ‘fruitful and consistent exchanges’ between the AES and Russia, which have yielded tangible gains beyond defense matters. These include tangible progress in economic and trade cooperation, all aligned with a shared diplomatic vision.
On counterterrorism, the AES ministers underscored the pressing need to scale up joint military efforts. Their goal is to bolster the operational readiness of the unified AES Joint Force, while also accelerating economic integration as outlined in the Alliance’s Year II roadmap.
Russia reaffirms long-term commitment
Sergei Lavrov, Russia’s top diplomat, reiterated Moscow’s resolve to deepen mutually advantageous ties with the Sahel States Alliance. He emphasized Russia’s unwavering backing for regional security initiatives and its support for sustainable development programs aimed at improving living standards across the affected zones.
The latest Niamey talks follow the inaugural AES-Russia consultations held in Moscow in April 2025, part of a broader diplomatic tour by Sergei Lavrov across Africa.
