Diplomatic Reciprocity Triggers Visa Suspension
In a move driven by diplomatic reciprocity, Taiwan has announced the suspension of visa processing for Moroccan citizens. This decision follows reports that Morocco has halted the issuance of visa confirmation letters for Taiwanese travelers worldwide, as confirmed by Taiwan‘s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The disruption began when Morocco‘s embassy in Japan notified Taiwanese travel agencies of the suspension, signaling a broader policy shift. The Moroccan government is understood to have instructed all its embassies and consulates globally to cease processing these requests, significantly impacting bilateral travel and exchanges.
In retaliation, Taiwan implemented its own visa suspension for Moroccan nationals starting Friday, with exceptions granted only for special authorization cases. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has urged Morocco to reinstate practical travel arrangements and emphasized that it will continue monitoring Morocco‘s visa policies before considering further actions.
Diplomatic Relations Shape Travel Policies
Morocco does not officially recognize Taiwan, adhering to the principle of a «single China.» Instead, it maintains formal diplomatic ties with the People’s Republic of China. As a result, Rabat and Taipei lack official diplomatic relations, contributing to the current visa-related tensions.
