Faure Gnassingbé, President of the Togolese Council, met with Luiz Ivaldo Villafañe Gomes Santos, Brazil’s Ambassador to Togo, in Lomé on July 30, 2026. The high-level discussion underscored the shared commitment of both nations to deepen their long-standing partnership through dialogue and sustained cooperation.
During the meeting, the Brazilian diplomat outlined the current state of relations between Lomé and Brasília while highlighting potential collaboration opportunities across key sectors. He emphasized Brazil’s readiness to expand this cooperation to serve the mutual interests of both populations.
« We explored the century-old ties between our nations, our bonds of friendship and cooperation, and reaffirmed our determination to further enhance these relationships for shared progress », stated Luiz Ivaldo Villafañe Gomes Santos following the audience.

The talks also addressed strategies to bolster Brazil’s engagement with African nations through enhanced South-South cooperation. The focus was on leveraging shared experiences, mutual benefits, and solidarity to drive progress in the region.
Diplomatic ties since 1972
Togo and Brazil established diplomatic relations in 1972, which have since evolved to encompass critical areas such as agriculture, security, vocational training, and technological exchange. A major milestone was achieved in November 2018 with the signing of a reciprocal visa waiver agreement for holders of diplomatic and service passports in Lomé.
The meeting in Lomé reaffirmed the dedication of both nations to strengthening their bilateral partnership and addressing regional and global challenges through collaborative efforts.
