US reaffirms long-standing support for Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara

During the 27th anniversary of Morocco’s Throne Day on July 30, King Mohammed VI received a historic message from US President Donald Trump. In the communication, Trump reiterated Washington’s unwavering recognition of Morocco’s full sovereignty over Western Sahara and endorsed Rabat’s autonomy initiative as the sole pragmatic path to resolve the decades-long territorial dispute.

«The United States stands firm: we recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara and endorse its autonomy proposal as a serious, credible, and realistic foundation for a just and lasting solution,» Trump emphasized in the written statement.

He argued that «any alternative approach only perpetuates the status quo,» calling such efforts «unacceptable.» «This dispute must conclude now. The United States will continue driving progress toward that end,» he declared.

Beyond the territorial affirmation, Trump’s message conveyed warm congratulations to King Mohammed VI and the Moroccan people, highlighting «250 years of enduring friendship and shared history» between the two nations. He described the alliance as «rooted in mutual trust and respect.»

The US leader praised King Mohammed VI’s «wise leadership,» hailing him as «a cornerstone of regional stability.» He underscored Morocco’s «consistent dedication to peace, combating extremism, and safeguarding security—for both Americans and Moroccans—including through its pivotal role in the Abraham Accords.» Trump framed the partnership as «invaluable to the United States» and pledged collaborative efforts to «bolster security across the Sahel.»

Economically, Trump directed US officials to «pursue economic and social development initiatives with Morocco, including within Western Sahara.» He spotlighted key sectors for cooperation: technology, innovation, energy, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, and defense. «Together, we will forge a new era,» he concluded, urging a relationship prioritizing the welfare of both peoples.
