The United States Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, conveyed a congratulatory message to King Mohammed VI on July 30, marking the 27th anniversary of His Majesty’s accession to the throne of Morocco.
In his statement, Rubio highlighted the enduring bond between the two nations, stating, «For nearly 250 years, the United States and Morocco have shared the oldest friendship in American history. This partnership is built on shared values and a joint commitment to peace, security, and prosperity.»
He added, «On behalf of the United States, I extend my warmest greetings to His Majesty King Mohammed VI and the Moroccan people as we celebrate this milestone.» The message was officially released by the U.S. Department of State.
Strengthening bilateral cooperation for regional stability
Rubio emphasized that the Morocco-USA relationship will continue to deepen across multiple sectors in the coming years. «Together, we will advance peace, regional stability, and economic growth for the benefit of both our nations,» he stated.
The U.S. Secretary of State underscored Washington’s unwavering stance on the Western Sahara issue, reaffirming full support for Morocco’s autonomy proposal. «The United States recognizes Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and endorses its serious, credible, and realistic autonomy plan as the sole foundation for a fair, lasting, and mutually acceptable solution,» Rubio declared.
He warned that alternative approaches would only prolong the status quo, which he deemed unacceptable. «A genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty presents the region and the continent with an opportunity to move forward after five decades of stagnation,» he asserted.
Morocco’s role in securing the Sahel
Rubio praised Morocco’s leadership in fostering regional stability, particularly through its pivotal role in the Abraham Accords. «Under the visionary leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Morocco stands as a cornerstone of security in the region,» he noted.
The U.S. diplomat stressed that Washington values this partnership highly and looks forward to expanding collaboration to enhance security across the Sahel. «Your Majesty’s vision for economic growth will bring new prosperity to both our peoples, and the Administration is committed to fostering socio-economic development, including within the Moroccan Sahara,» he added.
Future-focused partnership in key sectors
Looking ahead to the next 250 years of friendship, Rubio outlined the U.S. commitment to strengthening ties in critical areas. «As we embark on this journey, the United States will remain a trusted partner in energy, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, and defense,» he concluded.
