The Cameroonian government has announced an extension of the census period for the second consecutive time, following persistent challenges in coverage and data collection across the country.
Government Extends Census Deadline Again
An additional period for data collection has been authorized by Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute, aimed at capturing more households, individuals, and agricultural operations that were previously missed. This decision comes as part of the ongoing fourth general population, housing, and agriculture census, which has faced significant hurdles since its launch in April.
Low Participation and Coverage Gaps
According to officials from the census commission, only 60.4% of the population has been recorded so far. Concerns have been raised about underrepresentation in major urban centers like Yaoundé and Douala, where newly developed neighborhoods remain unaccounted for in the mapping process. Some residents report never encountering census agents, further highlighting the gaps in outreach efforts.
Key Challenges Impacting Census Progress
The operation has encountered multiple obstacles, including delays in payments to field agents, which have led to frustration and reduced efficiency. Additionally, low participation rates among certain households, language barriers, and security concerns in high-risk areas have compounded the difficulties. Addressing these issues has become critical to ensuring a comprehensive and accurate census.
