Deadly Boko Haram attack leaves Niger soldiers dead near Lake Chad

A coordinated assault by Boko Haram fighters near the southeastern Niger town of N’Guigmi has resulted in the loss of life among government troops, local sources confirmed on Saturday. The attack targeted a military outpost in the region bordering Lake Chad, an area known for its complex terrain and ongoing security challenges.

N’Guigmi: A strategic yet vulnerable location

Situated in the Diffa region, N’Guigmi serves as a critical garrison town adjacent to the vast Lake Chad basin—a shared waterway bordered by Nigeria, Cameroon, Niger, and Chad. Since 2009, this area has become a hotspot for militant activity, hosting both Boko Haram and the Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP).

Casualties and aftermath of the assault

Local eyewitnesses reported that around ten soldiers were killed in the pre-dawn raid on Friday, with additional fatalities among the attackers. Military forces have since launched counter-operations to secure the area and prevent further infiltration.
