As the Grand Magal approaches, the President of the National Assembly made a customary courtesy visit to the Mouride khalife general in Touba. Ousmane Sonko arrived with a prominent delegation of lawmakers and Pastef officials, reinforcing the bonds between the state and the Mouride brotherhood amid recent controversies.
The leader underscored the enduring significance of Serigne Touba, the founder of Mouridism, before the spiritual patriarch. « Our joy is immeasurable. Our respect for Serigne Touba knows no bounds, owing to his teachings, his journey, and his vision, » he remarked. He continued, « He stands as a model for anyone seeking to govern a nation. His example embodies patriotism and self-reliance. True freedom begins with independence, » a sentiment that resonates deeply with Sonko’s political philosophy.
During his address, the National Assembly chief highlighted a pivotal moment in the history of Touba’s Grand Mosque. « A close associate recently shared that Serigne Touba once requested disciples contribute just 140 francs toward its construction, » he recounted. « At the time, outsiders offered to fund the mosque, but he declined. » He emphasized, « The path to Touba’s greatness is well-documented. Had our leaders followed Serigne Touba’s example, we wouldn’t be burdened by mounting public debt today, » a thinly veiled critique of fiscal mismanagement.
Citing the wisdom of Serigne Cheikh Gaindé Fatma, Ousmane Sonko wrapped up with a call for collective responsibility: « Assess what people can contribute, and manage resources transparently so no one is left in the dark. » This encapsulates his vision for governance rooted in accountability and citizen engagement.
